Cedars Village

Cedars village is a retirement community located in Chorleywood, offering residence a range of retirement properties such as apartment and cottages designed to cater to the needs and preferences of the retirees.

Overview

Cedars village is made off a complex grade 2 listed manor house, a modern apartment complex and individual bungalow. We were contracted to refurbish all roof areas of the manor house and the apartment block, which comprised flat, slate, and lead roofs. Additionally, all original cast iron rainwater goods had deteriorated over time. While preserving the distinctive character and architectural elements of the listed building was paramount, we also aimed to implement a durable waterproofing solution to safeguard the structure for years to come. Extensive carpentry was essential to address rot in structural roof timbers, and the majority of roofs required new decking and various other necessary repairs.

Solutions

The existing slate roofs underwent a meticulous process of stripping, re-decking, and re-slating, employing first-grade slates throughout. All ridges and hips were skillfully fashioned from lead. Notably, nine dormer windows were replaced with robust code 6 lead, and over 7 tonnes of new lead, along with lead flashings, were meticulously integrated into the structure. Where feasible, damaged asphalt received meticulous repair before being overlaid with a bitumen membrane. In numerous instances, the deck and supporting timbers necessitated renewal. Despite the project’s simplicity, its historical context presented unique challenges that required adherence to traditional construction methods. Replicating the original construction approach ensured both simplicity and effectiveness in preserving the building’s integrity.
